While I'm awaiting some parts for my SG project, I came across another project to occupy my time... On a whim, I went to the local junk shop at lunch on Friday and found this. Picked it up for $25. plus $25 for tuners, a saddle and strings I'm in to it for $50.
Nearest I can tell this dates from the mid 1980's
Headstock was pretty messed before I replaced the tuners
The back was completly white with mold. Sure cleaned up nicely!
It's a "VIBRA" model # 66, whatever that is. It appears to be an entry level classical with a laminated (read 3 ply) top. There are no surface blemishes, the finish is quite nice. It's holding tune now and is actually rather nice to play, though the action is still just a bit high even with a really low saddle. Intonation is good.
The back was covered with mold, someone had strung it with steel strings breaking the saddle and several tuners in the process.
Note the neck bow from all those years under the stress of steel strings!
Says here it's a Vibra model #66.
In order to get the string height down, the bridge has been cut really low.
I installed new tuners and a new plastic saddle as a temporary repair, note it's almost level with the bridge.
Now for the remaining issue, there's quite a bow in the neck from the steel strings.
Update,
After allowing the guitar to acclimatize to the proper strings the neck straightened itself out. I was planning on selling this guitar but a friend of mine lost everything in a fire in New York City. So I put it into a hard shell case and sent it off to her. The smile on her face is payment enough!
